This program will prepare participants to be work-ready inspectors for transportation, construction, and engineering firms. Inspector jobs have never been in higher demand. In Texas alone, $27.5 billion will be spent in the next five years on highways and bridges! Persons who can successfully observe, measure, and document the work based on the specification standards are needed on every project, every day. Starting pay for entry-level inspectors is typically in the $30/hour range and could be much higher for those who excel in this program.

This course is presented in Spanish. It is equivalent to the Flagger Training in English (CCT 300). It is intended for individuals who will be performing or engaging in flagging duties on construction/maintenance projects.

CCT 401 - Work Zone Construction Site Safety
12 Hours

This course is designed to concentrate on activities which generate the highest level of accidents and injuries in road construction and maintenance work zones. It will help students recognize unsafe work practices and reduce or eliminate hazards from the work environment.

CCT 515 - Installation and Maintenance of Signs and Pavement Markings

This course is designed to help understand current practices in the application, installation, and operation of signs used on roads and streets.

CCT 520 - Work Zone Traffic Control/Qualified Flagger

This is the primary course for all personnel involved in the design, layout, and maintenance of traffic control devices on public roadways.

This course provides an update of basic changes included in the Revision 2, November 2011 edition of the Texas Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD).

TxLTAP

This program is supported through funds provided by The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The Texas Local Technical Assistance Program (TxLTAP) is managed by the University of Texas Arlington's Public Works Institute.

Through training geared to local government circumstances, customized technical assistance, advice provided at events, and a library of resources, TxLTAP provides relevant and impactful information focused on road and bridge/culvert maintenance, the use of traffic control devices and other techniques to promote traffic safety.

Qualified Flagger Courses

FLG 521
Qualified Flagger Training
4 Hours

The safety of the public and your work zone crews is the top priority. Learn how to set up and operate flagging stations that are both safe and effective. This training combines lectures, demonstrations, video presentations, and hands-on skill practice. Individuals interested in receiving training as an escort flagger in accordance with Texas law and Chapter 22 of the Basic Peace Officer Course can take this class to meet the new regulatory obligations.

Qualified Flagger Training & Trainer
8 Hours

This course was established to certify individuals to teach “Qualified Flagger” training, as specified by Texas Department of Transportation 2014 Standard Specification Items 7 and 502. After successful completion of this course, including physical demonstrations and teach-backs demonstrating teaching skills, the student will be equipped to train “qualified flaggers”. Individuals interested in receiving training or training others as an escort flagger in accordance with Texas law and Chapter 22 of the Basic Peace Officer Course can take this class to meet the new regulatory obligations.

Heavy Equipment Training

The University of Texas at Arlington offers heavy equipment operator training for earthmoving, hoisting, and material handling equipment. The training programs cover: safety, preventive maintenance, inspections, applicable OSHA standards, and safe, correct operating techniques. The training is conducted at the client’s site using the client's equipment.

Crane and Rigging Training

The University of Texas at Arlington offers crane, rigging and crane operator qualification training programs. Instruction is delivered through a blended approach which includes classroom instruction and in-the-seat operation of the equipment. Topics cover: safety, preventive maintenance, inspections, applicable OSHA standards, and safe, correct operating techniques.

Operator Qualification Assessments

The University of Texas at Arlington offers a third party evaluation of an organization’s experienced heavy equipment operators. The assessments involve a series of operator qualification tests relevant to a specific piece of equipment to verify and document operator competency.

WKZ 100 - Work Zone Safety: Temporary Traffic Control

This course is designed to serve as an introduction/overview of established traffic control guidelines for maintenance/construction activities and other short-term operations. Course meets TxDOT's Special Provision to Item 7 training standard for "Other Work Zone Personnel".

This course is geared to those who supervise traffic control technicians and other personnel in roadway work zones. Course meets TxDOT's Special Provision to Item 7 training standard for "Contractor Responsible Person and Alternate".

WKZ 520 - Work Zone Traffic Control/Qualified Flagger

CS 202 - Confined Space Safety

This course is designed to meet the training requirements of the OSHA Standard for confined space entry for entrants, attendants, and entry-supervisors. It is intended to provide participants who might be exposed to confined space hazards with the ability to recognize and minimize such hazards.

ELC 203 - Electrical Safety


This course is intended to provide participants who might be exposed to electrical hazards (such as electric shock, electrocution, fires, and explosions) with the ability to recognize and minimize such hazards.

ELC 452 - Electrical Arc Flash
and NFPA 70-E

This course is designed to introduce the student to the basic components of an electrical circuit, the potential hazards, and how to recognize and avoid such hazards. This course will introduce various portions of NFPA, Vol. 70E covering electrical hazards and personal protective equipment (PPE).

ELC 450 - Roadway Illumination and Electrical Installation

This course is specifically designed to cover all aspects of the electrical installation. Blending the TxDOT specification, electrical details, construction plans and the National Electrical Code in a manner best aligned with the installation process encountered in the field enhances learning and retention of course material. A certification test is administered at the end of the class. Those attendees receiving a certification card will be placed on a state wide list. This course is required for contractor's wishing to bid on state projects. Inspectors are required to check for certification of employees in the field.

Subsurface Utility Locating & Marking Workshop
1 day (8 hours)

This information packed training addresses both the art and science behind underground utility line locating and marking, as well as, state laws, standards, and regulations. The course provides a balanced mixture of classroom training combined with hands-on field instruction performed outdoors. Participants gain an A-Z understanding of the fundamentals of line locating. Special emphasis is placed on mastery of the electronic detection equipment and troubleshooting techniques to solve utility locating puzzles.

Advanced Utility Locator Training

This 2 day course offers participants a chance take their art and skills to the next level. Students will enjoy plenty of hands on training time spent outdoors utilizing an assorted array of locating devices and methods. Pick up a few tips for creating and deploying a site locating plan along with advanced troubleshooting techniques utilizing both equipment and deductive reasoning skills to identify, overcome and even prevent certain types of line locating errors.

This training is designed for gathering, transmission, and distribution pipeline system employees responsible for design, construction, maintenance, and construction of the pipeline system. This is a customized training event designed to address pipeline specific issues, locating challenges, and best practices for damage prevention. Round table discussions are part of this well received course.

Pipeline Basic Locator Training

This basic training is designed for pipeline system employees responsible for design, construction, and maintenance of the pipeline system. The course will address pipeline specific issues and regulatory requirements, locating challenges as well as best practices for damage prevention. Accurate locating techniques and safe excavation practices are the fixtures of this training. Recommended for pipeline employees and contractors with little or no experience in the pipeline industry.

Electrical Online

This series of online courses is to extend your electrical certification in order to continue your work on Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) projects. The TRF450 is a required prerequisite.

Each online training module is $100 and must be paid by credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express). No refunds are permitted.

Upon successful completion of a minimum of three (3) modules of your choosing, a wallet card will be mailed from the University of Texas Arlington (UTA). The expiration date of this wallet card will be 3 years from the expiration date of your current card issued by UTA.

Texas Heavy Equipment Operator Academy

The University of Texas at Arlington, Division for Enterprise Development is offering custom training specialized for the Heavy Highway Construction Industry. Basic, Intermediate, and Operator Qualification Heavy Equipment Operator Training is available. This program combines classroom training with field experience. UTA will provide the curriculum and the instructors, and you can provide the classroom and the equipment. Or if you need a complete package, we can provide everything.
