- Five years of maritime industry safety experience. A bachelor or higher college degree in occupational safety and health or industrial hygiene by an accredited college or university, a Certified Marine Chemist (CMC), Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) designation in the applicable training area may be substituted for two years of experience. TRAINER COURSE IN OSHA STANDARDS FOR THE MARITIME INDUSTRY
30 Hours | $695; $720*Contract Price: $9,000; $10,000*
This course is designed for individuals interested in teaching the 10- and 30-hour Maritime safety and health Outreach Training Program to their employees and other interested groups. Special emphasis is placed on those topics required in the 10- and 30-hour Outreach Training Program as well as the most hazardous in the maritime industry using OSHA Maritime Standards as a guide. Students are briefed on effective instructional approaches and use of visual aids and handouts. This course allows the student to become a trainer in the Outreach Training Program, to conduct 10- and 30-hour maritime classes in shipyard employment, marine terminals, and longshoring, and to issue cards to participants after verifying course completion. Students in OSHA #5400 Trainer Course in OSHA Standards for the Maritime Industry who wish to participate as authorized Outreach Trainer Program trainers in the OSHA Outreach Training Program must successfully prepare a presentation on an assigned OSHA maritime industry Outreach Training Program topic individually or as part of a group and successfully pass a written exam at the end of the course.

Dan has had a long career as a mariner, serving with the US Coast Guard, US Merchant Marine, and retired from the Navy Reserve as a Chief Warrant Officer 5 (Ship's Bos'n) fall of 2017. Throughout his Military Career of 38 years (and other jobs he has held), many his daily management activities were focused on safety for his crew. He was involved in training for the many types of material handling equipment in ports and shipboard cranes his crews used, cargo handling, shipboard safety, and regular maintenance. He actively sought out times to improve processes and added safety training to all job tasks. After his deployment with the US Navy in 2009, he embarked on an Industrial Safety Master Degree through University of Texas at Tyler. After completing his degree he added OSHA certifications as a Certified Safety & Health Officer - General Industry, Specialist in Safety & Health for Maritime & Construction. He has been teaching for UT Arlington OSHA Ed Center since 2015 in General Industry & Maritime topics. He continues teaching (1998 to present) as the lead Maritime Safety Instructor for Mercy Ships. As the founder of Crossed Anchor Safety, he has developed training courses in a number of areas, taught in a number of East Texas Companies and at Kilgore College.
