This experiential course offers students a unique opportunity to gain insight into the lived experience of dementia through a combination of interactive simulations and educational instruction. Experience Dementia is structured as a three-part learning experience designed to deepen understanding, build empathy, and introduce practical care strategies based on the Positive Approach to Care® model.

Students will begin with a hands-on simulation using sensory deprivation tools that alter sight, sound, and touch, allowing them to experience the challenges faced by individuals living with dementia. Participants will rotate through roles as both caregiver and care recipient, completing everyday tasks under these conditions.

The second component of the course provides foundational education on dementia, including brain changes, progression through stages, and an introduction to Positive Approach®, PAC™, GEMS®, Hand-under-Hand® (HuH™), and Positive Physical Approach™ (PPA™) techniques developed by Teepa Snow. These strategies emphasize respectful, person-centered care and effective communication.

In the final session, students will revisit the simulation, this time applying PAC skills to caregiving tasks. This allows for reflection and reinforcement of learning, highlighting the impact of informed care practices.
