Care of the Obese Patients Series

Nurses in all care settings today are providing care to an increasing number of obese patients. The Center for Disease Control reports that one-third of US adults were obese in 2007-2008. Obesity presents unique challenges for nursing. In this series, a national expert in the field of bariatric nursing will discuss the special nursing care needs of obese patients from skin care to respiratory concerns, mobility, medication response, safe patient handling, and the psychological and emotional supports that patients may need. In the second part of the series, the focus will be on the nursing care needs of patients having bariatric surgery from preoperative preparation through post-operative care and discharge teaching.
