Ogan Gurel, MD

Dr. Ogan Gurel serves as BioHealth Innovation Specialist at the University of Texas Arlington with academic appointments inthe Department of Kinesiology and Department of Nursing in the College of Nursing & Health Innovation (CONHI), the Department of Management in the College of Business (COB), the Department of Philosophy & Humanities in the College of Liberal Arts (COLA), the Department of Bioengineering in the College of Engineering (COE), and the Division of Data Science in the College of Science (COS).

Dr. Gurel's career has ranged widely over all areas of bioinformatics and health informatics, working at companies and institutions such as IBM, Samsung, Booz Allen, Sg2, Sungkyunkwan University, DGIST, Roosevelt University, Harvard University, the Solbridge International School of Business (Korea), the University of Illinois at Chicago, Columbia University as well as many innovative startups.

Dr. Gurel obtained an MD degree Alpha Omega Alpha from the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons (also doing graduate work in structural biology with Prof. Wayne Hendrickson, earning an MPhil degree) and received his bachelor's degree in Biochemical Sciences cum laude from Harvard College working with Prof. Martin Karplus (Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2013).

Authoring 14 peer-reviewed scholarly papers, presenting nearly 200 conference proceedings, and co-inventor on ten patent applications (three granted), this course provides a solid foundation in both areas. The focus is on building a solid background, learning basic informatics tools, understanding real-world applications, and preparing participants for further study or entry-level roles in bioinformatics and/or health informatics.
