Founded in 1968, The University of Texas at Arlington's Division of Continuing Ed (CE), later renamed The Division for Enterprise Development (DED), is an organization with more than 50 years of professional training to over 480,000 participants worldwide.

 

Located at the largest university in North Texas and second largest in The University of Texas System, DED is in the heart of Dallas-Fort Worth, challenging our participants to engage with the world around them in ways that make a measurable impact.

The Division for Enterprise Development celebrates over half a century of customized solutions beyond traditional education, training, and consulting programs.

The division's legacy continues as we provide adult education and learning management solutions to government, academic, private organizations, and individuals locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally.


50th Anniversary Events


Free Professional Training | Monday, April 24 In celebration of our 50 years of serving our community, DED hosted free professional training and events. Programming included sessions from the Safety and Health program such as OSHA #7100 Introduction to Machinery and Machine Guard Safeguarding, and the OSHA #7105 Evacuation and Emergency Planning.
The Environmental Training Institute conducted the 2023 Earth Day Outreach Training Event from 1 PM - 4 PM with guest speakers from TCEQ and EPA. Participants attending sessions for OSHA and Earth Day received a Certificate of Completion from UTA!

Attendees could visit the Health Careers Institute to discuss jumpstarting their career in healthcare, certificate programs, financial resources and services, and one-on-one free consultation with healthcare program experts. Lastly, the Continuing Education program invited all to come learn about business, technology, allied health, workplace training, certificate programs, and more.

Vice President of Global Education

A recognized leader in university-based professional education and distance education operations, Teresea Madden has over 26 years of service with the State of Texas. After serving several years as a national not-for-profit executive, she was recruited to serve as Director for several divisions. The Texas A&M University System awarded Teresea the A&M System's highest honor, Regents Fellow, for her work with underserved populations along the Texas border and workforce development initiatives.

Teresea joined The University of Texas at Arlington in 2004 as Director of Continuing Education. While continuing to be a leader in outreach and extension, she took on additional responsibilities within distance education operation, expanded outreach to serve 40,000 annually, and advanced to Vice President of Global Outreach and Extended Studies.

Cassandra Smith is an accomplished official with a career spanning over 30 years in various leadership roles across multiple industries. Currently, she serves as the Executive Director at The University of Texas at Arlington's Division for Enterprise Development, a position she has held for the past 17 years. In this capacity, she has been responsible for the strategic direction and operational management of the division, leading its growth and development in delivering innovative, high-quality education, training, and consulting services to businesses and individuals.

Her background and leadership skills make her a valuable asset to any organization looking to grow and thrive in today's competitive marketplace.

Executive Director for the Division for Enterprise Development

Rick McCreary is the executive IT leader for UTA's Division for Enterprise Development. The Division supports the University's missions of public service, community outreach and lifelong learning with training and service programs for a variety of areas, including healthcare, technology, safety, transportation, and environmental services. He leads all IT aspects of the Division, including strategic planning, operations, budget oversight, risk management, governance, and development of IT products and services.

Rick also leads UTA's Center for Distance Education, which provides centralized management and support of the University's online education offerings, and provides services to faculty, students, and staff in five key areas: Instructional Design, Faculty Training & Development, Technical Media Production, Operations & Support, and Program Development & Coordination.

Prior to joining UTA in 2012, Rick served in a variety of private and public IT and eLearning management positions.

Through The Decades


    1960's - 1970's
  • The University of Texas at Arlington's Division of Continuing Ed (CE) was founded.
  • Hosted the first Transmission and Substation Design and Operation Symposium, in conjunction with Texas utility companies.
    1980's
  • DED moved into The Swift Center.
  • Introductory through advanced classes in several computer languages offered.
    1990's
  • Additional programs, in many subcategories such as management and other business-related courses, professional development for several occupations were added.
  • Health Careers Institute was formed, offering classes to jumpstart careers as nursing assistants, EKG technicians and more.
  • The Kids & Teens University started offering enrichment opportunities to K-12 students, through summer programs focused on specific interests, from math to creative writing.
  • The Center for Distance Education began offering online courses, keeping pace with available technology.
    2000's
  • Construction began for the Continuing Education Building, partnering with The Arlington Chamber of Commerce, The University of Texas Arlington, WorkForce Solutions of Tarrant County, and The City of Arlington.
  • DED earned their initial TxDOT contract stabilizing the division and provided the foundation for the department's entire non-CE portfolio.
  • DED delivered over 500 courses each fiscal year with new programs such as: Transportation and Training Services (TTS), The Environmental Training Institute (ETI), Safety and Health Training, and nursing.
  • The awarding-winning OSHA Education Center opened in 2008, offering four levels of professional certifications.
    2010's
  • The 10th Anniversary Celebration of the Center for Continuing Education and Workforce Development building was held.
  • The Center for Environmental Excellence (CEE) at the University of Texas at Arlington opened, with the goal of providing consulting services, field work, project management, and staffing with specialists in a broad range of environmental disciplines.
    2020's
  • Classes now include summer boot camps, accelerated programs that allow participants to gain skills or certifications in a flexible manner, in the smallest amount of time.
  • Classes dedicated for serving the needs of the military community, through the military service center.
  • Participants are now able to complete many certificate programs entirely on-line.
