Certified Medical Biller and Coder
As the ones responsible for the proper processing of patient data (including recording insurance information and diagnoses, and collecting payment from providers), people with Medical Biller and Coder training are some of the most crucial members of any healthcare organization. This highly specialized and valuable position is the fastest growing career field in the healthcare industry, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and is therefore achieving professional certification as a Medical Biller and Coder can be a valuable step towards achieving a successful and flourishing medical career.
Students who complete the Certified Medical Biller and Coder program will work through four individual courses: Medical Billing and Coding, Medical Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology, and ICD-10. Students will learn all the skills necessary to become a certified and successful Medical Biller and Coder professional, including knowledge of basic medical terminology and anatomy & physiology, working with insurance providers, and coding using CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS. Students who complete the program will be awarded a voucher to take the American Academy of Professional Coders' (AAPC) Certified Professional Coder (CPC) Certification Exam, in addition to a one-year membership to the AAPC and recommended manuals.
**To obtain CPC certification, candidates must have at least two years of medical coding experience. Those who pass the CPC exam but do not have the required experience will be designated as an Apprentice (CPC-A) on their certificate. Removal of the CPC-A designation requires two letters of recommendation verifying at least two years of on-the-job experience, OR proof of completion of at least 80 contact hours of a coding preparation course and one letter, signed by employer, verifying one year of on-the-job experience.
