This course covers OSHA policies, procedures, and standards for the maritime industry. Using the OSHA Maritime Standards as a guide, special emphasis is placed on those areas in the maritime industry which are most hazardous. Upon course completion students will define maritime terms found in the OSHA Maritime Standards, identify hazards in the maritime industry and determine appropriate controls and abatement, locate OSHA Maritime Standards, policies and procedures, and describe the use of the OSHA Maritime Standards and regulations to supplement an ongoing safety and health program.

Dan Connors

Dan has had a long career as a mariner, serving with the US Coast Guard, US Merchant Marine, and retired from the Navy Reserve as a Chief Warrant Officer 5 (Ship's Bos'n) fall of 2017. Throughout his Military Career of 38 years (and other jobs he has held), many his daily management activities were focused on safety for his crew. He was involved in training for the many types of material handling equipment in ports and shipboard cranes his crews used, cargo handling, shipboard safety, and regular maintenance. He actively sought out times to improve processes and added safety training to all job tasks. After his deployment with the US Navy in 2009, he embarked on an Industrial Safety Master Degree through University of Texas at Tyler. After completing his degree he added OSHA certifications as a Certified Safety & Health Officer - General Industry, Specialist in Safety & Health for Maritime & Construction. He has been teaching for UT Arlington OSHA Ed Center since 2015 in General Industry & Maritime topics. He continues teaching (1998 to present) as the lead Maritime Safety Instructor for Mercy Ships. As the founder of Crossed Anchor Safety, he has developed training courses in a number of areas, taught in a number of East Texas Companies and at Kilgore College. He is able to assess and target areas of improvement in your Company Safety Programs which will ultimately improve your injury rate and production processes.
