This is the primary class for all personnel involved in the design, layout and maintenance of traffic control devices on public roadways in Texas. After attending this class, students will have a broad understanding of the requirements stated within the 2006 TMUTCD and will understand how to design, install and maintain traffic control devices within work zones. Students will design a series of traffic control plans, meeting the minimum requirements of the 2006 TMUTCD and as shown in the Typical Applications (TA's). The class will discuss the proper usage of common temporary traffic control devices such as cones, drums, barricades, signs, arrow panels, message boards. Students will understand each component of a typical work zone and how to lay out buffers, tapers, advance warning area, and termination areas. Students will understand sign spacing and required sign wordage. Students will also be introduced to the TxDOT standard traffic control plans in the event work must be performed on a TxDOT-controlled roadway. Students will be introduced to the requirements of crash-compliant traffic control devices and the TxDOT "Compliant Work Zone Traffic Control Device List" in accordance with NCHRP 350.
