TxDOT Electrical Requirements for Installation of Traffic Signal Systems is for the experienced personnel who inspect or install electrical systems for traffic signal installations with or without luminaires on Texas roadways. The course examines TxDOT construction standards and the National Electrical Code (NEC). The emphasis is on the use of TxDOT project plans, Texas Standard Specifications for Construction and Maintenance of Highways, Streets and Bridges, the NEC and concerns in the areas of traffic signals and electrical installation for those signals. The purpose of the course is to improve the quality of construction for electrical installation of traffic signal systems.
This course will not cover the phasing or timing requirements of traffic signal cabinets. Participants are required to successfully complete an end of course examination proving competency or attainment of the course objectives.
- OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, participates will be able to :
- Explain the purpose of applicable articles in the National Electrical Code (NEC) and how they relate to TxDOT projects.
- Locate applicable articles in the NEC for installation of electrical systems for traffic signals.
- Locate information contained in the 600 series of the standard specifications, construction project general notes, departmental material specifications (DMS), pre-qualified materials, and on the applicable TxDOT standard detail sheets applicable to electrical and traffic signal installations.
- Explain how the requirements of the 600 series of the standard specifications, construction project general notes and TxDOT standard sheets relate to the NEC.
