DESCRIPTION: This course serves as the introductory and pre-requisite course for all other Hydrologic & Hydraulic classes offered through TxDOT. The course provides an introduction to simple hydrologic techniques (Rational Method and Regression Equations) and basic hydraulic principles including open channel flow, weir flow, and orifice flow. The overall purpose will establish a basis for culvert and bridge design. Participants are required to successfully complete an end of course examination proving competency or attainment of the course objectives. (Reference Human Resource Manual, Chapter 7, Section 11) Participants must bring scientific calculator and Engineering Scale (English units) to class.

Participants are required to successfully complete an end of course examination proving competency or attainment of the course objectives.

Participants must bring scientific calculator and straight edge.

OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of the class, participants will be able to:
1. Derive watershed parameters, including delineation of drainage area, watershed lengths, slopes, runoff coefficients, and NRCS Curve numbers, time of concentration, etc.
2. Derive flow rates using hydrologic methods including Rational method, Regression Equations, TR55 for simple unit hydrograph application.
3. Discuss the concepts of the continuity equation, energy concepts, weir and orifice concepts, etc. with one-dimensional, steady state applications to open channel flow.
4. Perform a simple hydraulic analysis.
