Project Management - Risk Assess

DESCRIPTION:This course will lead participants through the processes, techniques, and philosophies to identify risks, assess their impact on the project, plan for emergencies, manage contingencies, and handling risks in transportation projects.

Participants will learn the differences between issues and risks, how to identify risks, their impact, and responses to various risks, strategies to mitigate risk, TxDOT's risk tracking and reporting process, and contingency planning techniques.

This course will supplement use of the department's software for managing projects, Primavera Enterprise System (P6).

OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to apply these techniques to a project:
1. Use a consistent process for making decisions considering the risks and how to create an expectation that decisions must be well thought out and implemented with due diligence.
2. Identify the level of documentation needed for making decisions.
3. Involve stakeholders in the decision to participate in a meaningful way.
4. Involve stakeholders as needed throughout the process.
5. Anticipate vulnerabilities and develop an early warning system for risks.
6. Understand risks as opportunities and opportunities as risks.
7. Scope and parameters of the risk decision-making process.
8. Estimate the consequences of the risk.
9. Estimate and integrate the benefits and the costs of a decision.
10. Mitigate risks and evaluate risk control options.
11. Monitor the impact of the risk, once the plan has been initiated.
12. Foster the development of best practices.
